The Bench Press consists of three attempts. Firstly, competitors nominate a weight lift and if this is lifted successfully, competitors then move to the next stage to lift a heavier weight. Competitors have two chances to lift this weight and if this is not successful, the competitor is out of the contest. The best lift counts.
There are different age and bodyweight categories for male and females. The lifts in competition are strictly controlled therefore making it more difficult to succeed than in a gym environment.
Athletes must wear a leotard with a T-shirt below and flat soled shoes.
There are three referees at all times to judge each lift and each lift must be passed by two referees for it to be successful.
The push pull is run in the same way, but with the dead lift included.
